Dutch Explorer Yacht Concept Reveals Serene Interior Design Philosophy

ICON Yachts Unveils Carla Guilhem-Designed Mission M With Focus On Calm Sanctuary

Dutch yard ICON Yachts has unveiled the interior design of its 50.5-metre Mission M explorer yacht concept, offering a compelling vision of how expedition vessels can balance technical capability with refined living. The project represents a thoughtful approach to yacht ownership, where the journey itself becomes as important as the destination. Measuring 50.5 metres and 499GT, Mission M has been engineered on the yard’s ICON 50 technical platform, with exterior design by Weel Sluijter. The result is an Ice Class 1D-certified build capable of accommodating commercial-grade, heavy-duty equipment for operations in both tropical and Arctic remote regions. The vessel boasts an uncharacteristically long 7,000-nautical-mile range, allowing owners to undertake extended expeditions without frequent refueling.

With safety as a paramount concern, Mission M has been designed in accordance with regulations for yachts over 500GT and holds Polar Code C certification. The design philosophy extends beyond technical specifications to embrace a lifestyle centered on exploration and discovery. The yacht features an open, 10-metre aft deck equipped with a commercial-grade crane capable of lifting up to 9.6 tons with a 15-metre reach, making it suitable for serious expedition work. The design also offers an optional science configuration, in which the aft deck can hold two six-metre containers, one laboratory module and a separate staff module for up to four scientists. This flexibility transforms Mission M into a platform for scientific research and ocean conservation, appealing to owners who wish to contribute meaningfully to marine exploration and environmental stewardship.

The interior design, now revealed by Carla Guilhem, represents a departure from conventional yacht aesthetics. Rather than maximizing opulence, the spaces have been shaped by the Japanese philosophy of seijaku, centered on inner stillness and balance. This approach creates a calm counterpoint to the yacht’s rugged exterior, with restrained materials, tones and proportions designed to create a sense of sanctuary during extended expeditions. The model’s unconventional split-level design is carried over all six decks, creating an exceptional sense of space and volume. Inspired by commercial offshore design, the yacht features a 270-degree bridge and a spacious adjacent skylounge, allowing guests to be part of the journey and mission planning. This integration of functionality with guest experience reflects a modern understanding of how owners and their companions wish to engage with expedition travel.

Accommodation spans four guest cabins on the lower deck and a private owner’s deck with its own balcony. The interior design focuses on slowing the onboard rhythm and fostering a connection between guests and their surroundings, with spaces intended to enhance rather than compete with the experience of exploration. A strong dialogue between interior and exterior is central to the concept, balancing the yacht’s purposeful, expedition-led design with a more introspective and serene onboard environment. The tender and toy capacity reflects the vessel’s expedition credentials. Mission M can accommodate one 8.5-metre Arksen 85 expedition tender or one 10-metre ROAM landing craft, along with a 5-metre Ribeye Solas RHIB crew tender. For underwater exploration, owners can choose between a two-person U-Boat Worx Nemo Submersible or an ICON A5 seaplane, with additional watersports equipment including Jet Skis, e-foils, SeaBobs and snorkelling gear.

As a semi-custom project, Mission M offers owners the choice of personalizing the layout and interior to suit their specific vision for expedition travel. The concept is available for sale with Royal Yacht International, positioning it within the growing market of owners seeking vessels that combine serious capability with refined comfort. ICON Yachts has established itself as a builder of expedition-focused vessels, with four yachts currently on the water, the largest being the 67.5-metre Loon. The yard recently celebrated the technical launch of its 70-metre conversion project, Project Master, originally built by Kleven as the offshore rescue and support ship Ocean Ness. This extensive rebuild is transforming the vessel into one of the world’s most capable explorer yachts, demonstrating the yard’s commitment to creating vessels that redefine what expedition ownership can mean. The Mission M concept continues this trajectory, offering a blueprint for how modern explorers can travel in both comfort and purpose.
