Model & Build Details
The Catalina Morgan 440 Deck Salon, introduced in 2004, represents a collaboration between Catalina Yachts and Morgan Yachts, combining their expertise to create a vessel that caters to the needs of modern cruisers seeking comfort and performance.
Design and Construction
The 440 features a solid fiberglass hull below the waterline and a balsa-cored structure above, utilizing vinylester resin to prevent osmosis. The deck is securely through-bolted to an internal hull flange with 1-inch 316-stainless-steel bolts on 4-inch centers, bonded with 3M 5200 adhesive, ensuring structural integrity. The encapsulated-foam rudder, equipped with a 2-inch solid stainless-steel stock, hangs on a partial skeg, contributing to the vessel's durability and seaworthiness.
Interior Layout
The raised deck salon design enhances interior brightness and offers panoramic views, creating an inviting living space. The U-shaped galley is spacious and practical, featuring large double sinks, a three-burner stove, and ample counter space. The main saloon includes a raised U-shaped dinette to starboard, which can seat six people comfortably or convert into a double berth. To port, there is a three person settee with two recliners. The navigation station is also located to port, with a large chart table and an electrical panel.
Accommodations
The owner's stateroom forward features an island queen berth, ample storage space, and an ensuite head with a separate shower stall. The guest cabin aft offers a double berth and access to the aft head, with a utility space featuring a washer and dryer to starboard.
Performance
Designed with a deep forefoot leading to a low-wetted-surface profile with a fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder, the 440 balances liveaboard comfort with sailing performance, with a deep draft fin keel with a draft of 6 feet 5 inches. The mast height of 62 feet 4 inches is designed to fit under most Intracoastal Waterway bridges.
Cockpit and Deck Features
The cockpit is spacious and ergonomic, featuring a single wheel on a pedestal, a cockpit table, and comfortable seating for six. The cockpit is protected by a dodger and bimini, with easy access to the stern platform through retractable gates. Wide side decks and inboard shrouds ensure safe movement around the boat. A large anchor locker at the bow and an electric windlass facilitate anchoring.
In summary, the Catalina Morgan 440 Deck Salon exemplifies Catalina Yachts' commitment to quality craftsmanship and innovative design, offering a well-constructed, comfortable, and performance-oriented vessel tailored for discerning cruisers.
