Baby Blue, Sail No. 249 in the Friendship Sloop Society, was built in 1983 by the Jarvis Newman Company of Southwest Harbor, Maine. She is the last Newman Pemaquid built to date and a beautiful example of a traditional Maine sloop with modern amenities. Her hull is hand-laid fiberglass, and she has a one-piece molded fiberglass deck assembly with teak overlay. Her current homeport is Falmouth, Maine, but for many years she was on Lake Champlain. Her recent two owners have given her excellent care and upgrades as necessary. For the buyer who appreciates Maine's own classic sloop with proven stability, Baby Blue may be your sloop!

Construction

Baby Blue is Hull #18, and was built by the Jarvis Newman Boatyard in Southwest Harbor, Maine, along with her fiberglass deck assembly. She was finished by the Malcolm Pettegrow Boatyard also in Southwest Harbor in 1983. Her hull is solid hand-laid fiberglass. One-piece molded fiberglass with balsa core deck assembly with self-bailing and watertight cockpit, coamings, cabin ports, companionway hatch, and oiled teak overlay on cockpit seats and sole, and side decks. Varnished teak covered companion way boards and trim, toe rails, handrails, and coamings. External 2000-lb. lead keel fastened with bronze keel bolts. Deck and cockpit scuppers piped overboard. Custom bronze hardware. Edson wheel steering. A large cockpit and bridge deck that seat six comfortably.Topsides are awlgripped in Empress Blue.

Engine

Westerbeke 17 HP, FWC diesel. Hurth transmission. 2003 1" SS shaft swinging a 2-blade bronze prop. Single-lever Morse controls in cockpit. 750 engine hours. Good access to engine through cabin door under companionway.

SS standing rigging and Lignum Vitae deadeyes. Dacron running rigging. Custom bronze hardware includes main gooseneck, boom bail, and eagle billet head.

Accommodations

Baby Blue sleeps four in cabin with 2 vee berths forward and 2 quarter berths aft, 4" thick blue cushions for all berths (6'6" long). Galley consists of 2-burner CNG stove, SS sink with cold water hand pump, and ice box. Formica countertop, lockers and shelves outboard and below. The manual head is located between vee berths, plumbed to holding tank. Hanging shelves and storage beneath berths. White ceiling and bulkheads, varnished teak cabinets and trims, and varnished teak and holly cabin sole. Electric lighting, six fixed port lights and companionway opening w/screen for good light and ventilation.

Cockpit seating for 6+. Oiled teak seats and bridge deck overlay, and cockpit teak sole. Varnished teak companionway hatch, slats and trim, coaming cap, toe rails and hand rails. Bronze deck hardware and bronze & teak gallows frame aft. The decks were recalked in 2018. Blue Sunbrella covered cockpit cushions.
